Press Corps
Often referred to as the fourth
estate, the news media is charged with the important task of informing
our society of developing news events and acting as a watchdog for politicians
and governments. At SSUNS, this role will be no different. Delegates
on the Press Corps will be responsible for researching and writing articles
for The International Citizen.
What is The International Citizen?
The International Citizen is the delegate-produced newspaper
at SSUNS. It constitutes the primary news source for delegates, faculty
advisors and staff at the conference, covering all major news events
during the course of committee session, as well as providing information
on the people and events of the conference. Delegates working on
The International Citizen are members of the Press Corps and are
required to report on the news not from a personal perspective, but
from the perspective of their news publication.
Duties of the Press Corps
Delegates on the Press Corps will each be assigned to one of the major
international dailies featured at SSUNS 2009. They will work with the
Editor-in-Chief of The International Citizen and his two deputies,
the Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Copy-Editing and the Deputy Editor-in-Chief,
Photography and Press Conferences to produce several issues of the newspaper
during the conference. Delegates will have assistance with story brainstorming
and assignments, but they will be expected to produce their own work
in a timely and professional manner.
Preparing for the Press Corps
Delegates should prepare for the simulation by reading the Press Corps
background guide and developing a strong understanding of their newspaper's
slant and bias. They should read articles from all sections of the publication,
the news in particular, prior to attending the conference. Finally,
it may be helpful to "practice" writing a news article --
don't forget the five Ws and the H -- who, what, when, where, why, and
how.
Journalists are expected to have a high proficiency in written English.

The Jerusalem Post (Israel)
Chosun Ilbo (South Korea)
