Do NOT Pass Go, Do NOT Collect $200
The McDonald's Monopoly Fraud Scandal, 2001
Committee Description
In March 2000, the FBI received an anonymous tip about a mysterious man known only as “Uncle Jerry” who had allegedly been leading a scam that had been rigging the McDonald’s Monopoly promotion since 1987. The fraud involved a network of individuals who had been illegally smuggling million-dollar tickets, outsmarting corporate and law enforcement officials, and dodging investigation until an anonymous source involved with the string of crimes finally came forward. By 2001, when an official investigation had started, the scam had defrauded McDonald’s Corporation out of a total of $24M. The fraud was uncovered by the press around the same time, and a massive media frenzy ensued.
Delegates of this committee will assume the roles of McDonald’s executives and other key figures involved with this compelling story, navigating the investigation and resolving the company issues that arose from this massive scandal. They will be tasked with managing outside threats from the perpetrators of the fraud, FBI investigators and other law enforcement agents that were revealed to be involved, competing corporations taking advantage of this scandal to shrink McDonald’s slice of the pie, and the shareholders of McDonald’s itself. While handling these threats, delegates must also analyze the weaknesses of their Monopoly game and take steps to enhance the security and oversight of any future games and competitions that the Corporation holds. Additionally, delegates must restore the trust that the public has lost in McDonald’s as a result of this incredible fraud. If successful, the delegates will navigate the McDonald’s Corporation out of the tailspin it has been thrown into, and resolve the issues that the McMillions fraud has uncovered within-house. If unsuccessful, the future success of McDonald’s will likely change forever.
