The Iron Lady—Margaret Thatcher’s Cabinet*

ONLINE COMMITTEE

In the early summer of 1979, following the ousting of the Labour government of former Prime Minister James Callaghan from power, the Right Honourable Margaret Thatcher has become Britain’s first ever female Prime Minister to inhabit 10 Downing Street. Over the course of her premiership, Thatcher would earn the moniker “the Iron Lady”, owing to her uncompromising style of governance and controversial legacy.

Stepping into the shoes of many of the closest political associates of Thatcher within her First Ministry, delegates in the Thatcher’s Cabinet committee at SSUNS 2021 will need to grapple with the consequences of not only Thatcher’s aggressive anti-unionism and neoconservative policies, but too, the vast series of national crises that confronted the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland over the course of the 1980s.

As delegates within Thatcher’s Cabinet grapple for political power and influence, mediate Cabinet shuffles, and seek reelection, will they be able to simultaneously come together in the  face of increased IRA activity, of a looming war in the Falkland Islands, or any number of domestic crises? Only time will tell!

The Dais is excited to meet all of the delegates at SSUNS 2021!

If you have any questions regarding the committee, please feel free to email us at crisis@ssuns.org
