A Mughal Game of Thrones

Advanced Crisis: The succession of Shah Jahan, 1658

Committee Description

Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, a universal symbol of love and loyalty. However, these feelings were not passed down to their children. The four oldest heirs are eager to declare independence and fight each other to the bitter end at the first sign of the Emperor’s ill health. Among them are the brothers: Prince Dara, the eldest, holding power in the north; Viceroys Shuja and Murad, ruling Bengal and Gujarat, respectively; and Aurangzeb, consolidating power in the South. Additionally, the Rajputs are ready to break away at the first sign of weakness. With the Emperor’s health failing, it falls upon this committee, the Imperial Court, to maintain control of the Mughal Empire, which seems on the brink of tearing itself apart!
