Pacific Islands Forum (PIF)
Created in 1971, the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) aims to create cooperation within its 18 members located in the Pacific Ocean. It is responsible for all political, economic, and policies in order to guarantee peace, harmony, and inclusion in the region. With the best interests of the people at heart, the PIF helps bridge governments and international agencies. At SSUNS, delegates will shape the future direction of the Forum, and will help foster cooperation within and without the islands. The Pacific Islands Forum welcomes both beginner and advanced type delegates.
During the weekend, delegates will debate issues surrounding either the military and diplomatic role of global superpowers or the established and potential trade relations between islands. Considering the strategic location of the islands in the Pacific Ocean, global superpowers have been seeking to gain influence in the region. Between instability and disruptions, the PIF needs to assess their potential diverse involvement and its consequences. While the Forum navigates threat to governance, corruption, and unequal diplomatic ties, its members also need to consider trade relations within the region. This second topic will explore natural resources management and how to turn narrow domestic markets to an advantage. Forum Island Countries (FICs) heavily rely on natural resources exports to sustain their economies, are faced with narrow domestic markets, weak infrastructures, and low investment rates. Thus, FICs are often actively seeking ways to develop their economies.
The Dais is excited to meet all of the delegates at SSUNS 2021!
