SDG 16 - UN Human Rights Office

Double Delegation: Empowering and Advancing Civil Society

Committee Description

This committee of the UN Human Rights Office will address key issues impacting civil society and human rights, with a focus on the challenges faced by journalism and civil society organizations, the protection of free speech for LGBTQ+ communities, and the vital role of civil society in strengthening democracy. Discussions will center on the advocacy efforts of civil groups, examining their role in promoting social justice and defending marginalized communities. The committee will also explore the need for transparency, emphasizing the importance of openness in both governmental and non-governmental organizations. Additionally, the committee will highlight the role of civil society in ensuring accountability, serving as a checks-and-balances mechanism to hold governments responsible and ensure they remain transparent, accountable, and responsive to the needs of their citizens. The goal is to foster a deeper understanding of how civil society can contribute to a more just, democratic, and inclusive world.
